Recreation sector: ‘Corona crisis could lead to damage of 1 billion euros’ | NOW

If new measures are introduced throughout the Netherlands to contain the coronavirus, the damage to the tourism and water sports sector could amount to 1 billion euros annually, estimates interest group HISWA-RECRON.

According to HISWA-RECRON, the sector has already lost 700 million euros in turnover compared to last year. Measured over the entire year, a revenue decline of more than 30 percent is likely.

Apart from the lost turnover, the tourism and water sports sector is still waiting for customers who, due to an earlier cancellation, still have to redeem vouchers for a total of 400 million euros.

Director Geert Dijks says that the sector is again facing massive cancellations and a decline in bookings due to the recently introduced regional measures. “The decline in bookings and cancellation claims will increase to 60 million euros in the seven provinces that are now affected by November.”

If the measures are not relaxed quickly, the Christmas holidays at holiday parks can be considered lost, according to Dijks.
