NOC * NSF in consultation with government about new financial support | NOW

NOC * NSF understands the cabinet’s decision not to allow an audience to attend sports matches for the next three weeks. The sports umbrella organization is probably planning to call on government support again.

“Difficult times are dawning for associations. A number of income from a sports association is now completely lost because of the ban on the public, the lack of events and the closing of the canteens,” says general director Gerard Dielessen on the website of NOC * NSF.

“This situation could not last long without adequate compensation. We will therefore immediately enter into consultation with the government to determine to what extent the third aid package is sufficient and what additional support may be needed.”

The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport already made 110 million euros extra available for sports clubs in May. That money was meant to support the youth departments and to preserve the “unique Dutch infrastructure”, but it may not be enough.

The measure to ban supporters from sporting events – for both professionals and amateurs – is a result of the increasing corona infections in the Netherlands. This starts from Tuesday 6 pm and is valid until October 20. The cabinet will then consider whether this measure is needed for longer.

Dielessen: “It is good for the Netherlands that the sport remains open, both inside and outside. The cabinet has taken understandable measures that now limit our freedom to ensure that we do not lose this freedom further later this year.”
