Joop Zoetemelk back home after cycling accident in Paris | Cycling

The former cyclist was injured last week during a bike ride near his hometown Germigny l’Évêque. Zoetemelk, colliding with a passenger car, broke his left upper arm and his right hand. He also sustained minor injuries to his legs.

“It is impossible to thank everyone personally, but all the expressions of sympathy have done me very well,” said the 73-year-old Zoetemelk in a statement on Wednesday. He was in hospital for nine days and now says he would like to have plenty of time for himself to continue working on his recovery in peace.

The accident happened on the day that the Tour peloton finished on the Champs-Élyssées, just on the 40th anniversary of the Tour victory of Zoetemelk in 1980.
