Raphael Holzhauser has his long-hoped-for first selection for the Austrian national team. Beerschot’s playmaker is in the core of national coach Franco Foda for next week’s international matches against Greece, Northern Ireland and Romania.
With five goals and five assists, Raphael Holzhauser has given his calling card to football-loving Belgium in recent weeks. His strong performance with PhD candidate Beerschot did not go unnoticed in his home country. Holzhauser is in the Austrian selection for a triptych of international matches between 7 and 14 October: an exhibition game against Greece and Nations League games against Northern Ireland and Romania.
For the 27-year-old Holzhauser it is his first A-selection ever. He went through all the youth series with the national team and was even captain of the Austrian U23, but so far has never been called up with the big boys. Last month, he said in multiple interviews that he still dreamed of the national team.
Next week Holzie’s dream will finally come true. The most famous other names in the Austrian selection: David Alaba (Bayern Munich), Floriant Grillitsch (Hoffenheim) and Martin Hinteregger (Frankfurt).
