From this weekend, hospitals have to scale down regular care due to corona

Whatever measures the cabinet takes, the new rules for healthcare in hospitals will come too late. This weekend, the hospitals will be treating about a thousand corona patients, and that cannot be combined with regular care.

That says chairman Ernst Kuipers of the National Network Acute Care (LNAZ) Monday. This means that hospitals have to choose which care they still offer. “Hospitals have to make choices at some point and scale down regular care,” says Kuipers. Diederik Gommers, chairman of the Dutch Intensive Care Association, also says that “there is a threat of overcrowding”.

IC capacity

Hospitals are currently treating 660 corona patients. That is about twice as many as a week ago. According to the calculations, the number of patients admitted will rise to over 1000. By the following weekend there will be about 1,600, of which 400 to 700 in intensive care. During the first wave, intensive care treated about 1,400 corona patients, but then care for others was almost completely stopped. The hospitals now want to prevent this as much as possible.

In the first wave, the cabinet decided on a lockdown on March 15 to prevent the spread of the virus. It then took about three more weeks for the number of hospital admissions to peak. According to Kuipers, the number of infections is “now further than on March 15” and “we run the risk of running behind the facts”.

Fast increase

Of the 660 corona patients who are in hospitals on Monday, 518 are treated in nursing wards, 28 more than on Sunday. The number of corona patients in intensive care increased from 127 to 142. The total number of corona patients admitted thus rose by 43. Kuipers: “Initially, 100 patients were added every four days. Then it became a hundred every three days. Now the number is increasing by a hundred in two days. It’s getting faster and faster. “

Since last week, patients have been transferred to hospitals in other parts of the country to relieve the pressure on hospitals as much as possible. Ten people have been relocated in the past 24 hours.
