Corona measures put an end to BinckBank Tour | 1Limburg

The multi-day WorldTour cycling race BinckBank Tour was canceled on Dutch soil on the day the first ride was already held. The mayors of Sittard-Geleen, Vlissingen and Terneuzen took that decision on Tuesday evening.

The modified corona measures announced by the cabinet on Monday throw a spanner in the works of the multi-day cycling race that will be held on Limburg terrain, among other things. “It is only about the Dutch part. Whether the stages in Belgium will still be held is up to the organization”, a spokeswoman for the municipality of Sittard-Geleen said.

One of the measures that is disastrous for the Dutch part of the BinckBank Tour is that no audience should be present at sports matches. Not even on the side of the road during a cycling race.

Dutch and Belgian terrain
The BinckBank Tour was to be held from September 29 to October 3 on Dutch and Belgian terrain. On October 2, the fourth of a total of five stages would finish in Sittard-Geleen. “Unfortunately we had to make this difficult decision, however much we would have liked to have given this sporting event a place”, says Hans Verheijen, the mayor of Sittard-Geleen.

Opening ride
The opening stage was held on Tuesday, from Blankenberge in Belgium to Ardooie. The stage was won by the Belgian sprinter Jasper Philipsen.

At the end of next week, another big cycling race is on the program in South Limburg. After all, the Amstel Gold Race will be held on Saturday 10 October. It is expected that in the course of this week it will become clear whether the only Dutch cycling classic can definitely continue, or whether that race will also end.
