Circus-Wanty Gobert enters WorldTour level with CCC | license Cycling

With Circus-Wanty Gobert, Belgium has a third WorldTour team. The Walloon team of sports director Hilaire Van der Schueren will take over the license from CCC and from 2021 will be sure of participating in the most important agreements on the cycling calendar.

Polish shoe manufacturer CCC was hit hard this year during the corona crisis and pulled its hands away from cycling. Jim Ochowicz, owner of the WorldTour license, had to look for solutions and is now partnering with Circus-Wanty Gobert.

The Walloon has never hidden his ambitions. “Our project grows every year with some highlights, such as a win in the Amstel Gold Race and a first participation in the Tour”, says general manager Jean-François Bourlart.

“If we want to keep making progress, we also have to be present at the most important races.” With the WorldTour license in your pocket, Circus-Wanty Gobert is certain of a ticket for the classics, but also for the three grand tours.

Looking for big fish

The departure of Guillaume Martin to Cofidis in particular made the Walloon cycling team think. Sports director Hilaire Van der Schueren was unable to keep his French poulain as a pro-continental team.

As a WorldTour team, Circus-Wanty Gobert is now aiming at the bigger fish to build a core. But many riders no longer remain from CCC: Greg Van Avermaet (AG2R), Matteo Trentin (UAE), Alessandro De Marchi (Israel Start-Up Nation) and Fausto Masnada (Deceuninck-Quick Step), among others, have already sought other places .

With Baptiste Planckaert, Rein Taaramäe and Lorenzo Rota, Circus-Wanty Gobert has already attracted three reinforcements. But with an increased budget, it will certainly look for extra pawns.

Circus-Wanty Gobert is the third Belgian team in the WorldTour. It accompanies Lotto-Soudal and Deceuninck-Quick Step.
