CBS: 10,000 Dutch people died of corona during first wave | Inland

From March to June, a total of 7797 patients succumbed to corona. In a further 2,270 people, the treating physician indicated that the virus was probably the cause of death.

The majority are men (53%). In the age group 75-80, relatively nearly twice as many men died as women. Almost two thirds (60%) of all victims made use of the Long-term Care Act. “These are usually people who live in a nursing or care home,” says CBS chief sociologist Tanja Traag.

In the winter of 2017-2018, more people than average died during the influenza epidemic. “At that time the excess mortality was at a comparable level as now,” says Traag, who observes that after the peak of this spring, a period followed in which on average fewer people died. “If not many extra people die during a possible second wave, then the excess mortality at the end of the year can be reasonably limited.”

The corona epidemic may have a negative impact on life expectancy, according to Statistics Netherlands. The exact effect is not yet known. In the most unfavorable scenario – with very high mortality – the average life expectancy in 2020 could fall by as much as 1 year to the level of 2010.

In 2019 it increased even more. For men with 4 months (average 80.5) and women 3 months (average 83.6).
