Bergkamp speculates about return in ‘Ajax role’: ‘Between the lines, just like player’

Dennis Bergkamp is starting to itch again, three years after his controversial departure from Ajax. The Non-Flying Dutchman has been around for some time in the youth academy of Almere City, but would like to take up a similar position as at Ajax.

Bergkamp was then a member of the technical heart and said he was responsible for the connection between the first team and the youth teams. “What I did at Ajax was a bit the same as what I had as a player. I was not a midfielder or forward, but always played between the lines. That’s how I see myself as a trainer,” he tells the BBC.

“I enjoy being involved in the first team, but my strength lies in the promotion of youth players”, the 79-time international of Orange continues. He is surprised that there are no more ‘Bergkamp types’ walking around at the largest European clubs. “There the first team and the youth academy are often two separate islands.”

The 51-year-old Amsterdammer had to leave the field at Ajax in December 2017, together with head coach Marcel Keizer and assistant Hennie Spijkerman. “I haven’t had a full-time job since then. I’m not actively looking for it either, but I’m increasingly thinking about returning to the training field. Because that’s what I love the most.”
