Circus-Wanty Gobert will be part of the UCI WorldTour from next year. The Belgian team takes over the license from the Polish CCC.

Wanty has five Dutch riders under contract with brothers Danny and Boy van Poppel, Maurits Lammertink, Wesley Kreder and Corné van Kessel. In addition to Deceuninck-Quick-Step and Lotto-Soudal, it will be the third Belgian team in the WorldTour, in which the best nineteen teams in the world will ride.

Due to the new status, Wanty will have to start in all major races from next year, such as the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, Vuelta a España, Tour of Flanders and Paris Roubaix. As a pro-continental team, the team depended on wildcards until this year.

Wanty was founded in 2008 and is managed by the striking sports director Hilaire Van der Schueren. The biggest success was winning the Amstel Gold Race in 2016 with Enrico Gasparotto.

CCC in dire straits due to corona crisis

“We have built this team step by step with the ambition to one day be a WorldTour team,” said CEO Jean-François Bourlart on Wanty’s website. “I have no doubt that the team will be successful at this level too.”

Partly due to the corona crisis, the survival of CCC (formerly known as BMC) had been in danger for a long time. The Polish team gave riders permission to leave during the season if an offer came up.

The Belgian Greg Van Avermaet, the Russian Ilnur Zakarin and the Italian Matteo Trentin are the most famous riders of CCC. Van Avermaet (AG2R) and Trentin (UAE Emirates) have already found a new team for next year.
