Cape Town Stars (Pty) Ltd – the minority shareholder who has reached an agreement to take full control of Ajax Cape Town by October 1 – has filed an official application with the South African Football League to rename the club. The club wants to rename its name Cape Town Spurs.
The club’s name will be renamed once the application process is approved, according to the website Ajax Cape Town. Seven Stars and Cape Town Spurs merged in 1999 to form Ajax Cape Town. Now that Ajax has decided to pull the plug from the collaboration, the club will bear a different name.
The name Cape Town Spurs would still be known within the South African football community, the club said. Jonathan Ursem, writer of the book, told Ajax Showtime Ajax in Africa, about the eventual failure of the cooperation between Ajax Amsterdam and Ajax Cape Town.
