A memorial service marking the 79th anniversary of the horrific murder of tens of thousands of Jews on the eve of Yom Kippur was held this morning (Tuesday) in the Avi Yar killing field in Kiev.
The morning ceremony was attended by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zlansky, President of the Office of President Andrei Yarmak, Prime Minister Dennis Shmigel, Speaker of Parliament Dmitry Razomkov and Chairman of the Association of Jewish Communities in Ukraine Rabbi Meir Stumbler.
The organizer of the ceremony, Rabbi Rafael Rotman, opened with a prayer “To the Merciful One”, a chapter of Psalms and Kaddish. From there, the participants continued to lay the cornerstone for the museum and study center on the subject of the Holocaust.
In the Avi Yar killing valley, northwest of central Kiev, the Nazis murdered between 100,000 and 150,000 people, including about 50,000 Jews.
