On the other hand, a study for the treatment of coronavirus was published in the world’s most prestigious medical journal ‘The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM)’. According to the study; It has been demonstrated with clinical findings that a drug called ‘Remdesivir’ improves against coronavirus.
Disease course in the first coronavirus case in the USA
According to NEJM’s report; The drug was administered to a patient diagnosed with coronavirus in Washington, USA. The 35-year-old man traveling to Wuhan, where the outbreak started, became the first person in the country to have a positive coronavirus test after returning to the USA. Returning from Wuhan to Washington on January 15, the patient applied to an emergency care clinic on January 19, 2020, with a 4-day cough and fever complaint. Considering the patient’s travel history, local and state health departments and the Ministry of Health were informed. Although the patient reported that he did not go to the Huanan seafood market, which was stated to be the source of the coronavirus, and that he had no contact with the sick people during his trip to China, the procedure prepared for the coronavirus cases was performed. After the necessary samples were taken, the patient was actively monitored by the authorities and taken to home isolation. The patient who had positive coronavirus test was taken to the isolation unit. Symptoms such as fever, dry cough, weakness, runny nose, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea were recorded.
No abnormality was seen on a chest radiograph (day 7 of the patient) taken on the 3rd day of the hospital.
However, on the 5th day of the hospital (9 of the disease days), a second chest radiograph showed evidence of pneumonia (pneumonia) in the lower lobe of the left lung.
A change in breathing was also detected. On the 6th day in the hospital, the clinical picture of the patient began to change, the patient was given oxygen. Some medications were given on the progress of pneumonia. On the retracted chest x-ray, this time they found pneumonia in the right lobe of the lung.
On the evening of the 7th day, the patient was given remdesivir, and the next day the patient’s clinical condition improved. He wrote that all the symptoms of the patient, who have been in the hospital since January 30, have improved, with the exception of reduced cough.
On the 8th hospital day (disease day 12), the patient’s clinical condition improved. The bilateral lower lobe rales (abnormal breathing sounds resembling a crackling sound) in the lung of the patient whose oxygen supplementation was discontinued were no longer available. His appetite improved, all symptoms except cough improved.
