Manchester City excluded from the Champions League for violations of Financial Fair Play

Exclusion from the Champions League (2020/2021 and 2021/2022) for the next two editions and a fine of 30 million euros. This is the very harsh sanction that UEFA has imposed on Manchester City for violations of Financial Fair Play. According to the control committee of the International Federation, the English club would have “inflated” its sponsorships to adjust the accounts and demonstrate that they are in the required parameters regarding balance sheets, remaining within the balance of costs / revenues.

UEFA’s reasons in the press release

The verdict comes following an investigation that had taken place after the publication of emails and documents by the German magazine “Der Spiegel” in a report dating back to November 2018.

The Adjudicatory Chamber, after examining all the evidence, found that Manchester City Football Club had committed serious violations of UEFA’s licensing and financial fair play regulation, ” inflating “the revenues of its sponsorship in the budget balance accounts in the period between 2012 and 2016.

Complaints against the English club

The subject of the disputes that led to the disqualification of Manchester refers to the stratagem adopted by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan who – according to UEFA’s findings – paid substantial amounts (over 80 million euros) into the company’s coffers, guaranteeing revenue through sponsorship of Etihad, the airline of your country. In one of the e-mails examined, in fact, there would be traces of the paper track that leads both to the brand and to the Abu Dhabi United group that reports directly to the sheikh.

Manchester City ready for appeal

Manchester City’s reaction has the right to appeal this decision before the sports referee court.

The decision of the Judicial Chamber is subject to appeal to the Tas. If Manchester City Football Club exercises this right, the entire reasoned decision of the adjudicating Chamber will not be published before the final publication of the final prize by the CAS.
