The eyes of global markets were turned into the January 2020 Federal Reserve (Fed) interest rate decision. The FED announced its interest rate decision at 22:00 on Tuesday. The Fed announced that it did not change the interest rates in its decision, leaving the policy rate stable in the range of 1.50-1.75 percent.

WHAT WAS THE DOLLAR WAS?

The dollar / TL started the day with 5.94. It reached 5.96 at the end of the day. Euro / TL, which started the day in the 6.55 band, reached 6.56. The Euro / Dollar band was around 1.10 during the day.

EXPECTATION OF INTEREST DISCOUNT FROM TRUMP

Calling the bank to cut the interest, US President Donald Trump said yesterday on his social media account that the Fed should lower the interest rates to compete with other countries that are much lower, after which they will focus on paying debt and refinancing. Analysts stated that Fed officials stated that there is a 12 percent probability of interest rate cut expectations, and that they predicted that the bank will continue to follow the “wait-and-see” policy regarding interest after the recent positive macroeconomic data.

While 95 out of 108 economists participating in the Reuters survey expect the Fed to keep interest rates stable this week, JP Morgan analyst Michael Feroli said this meeting will be “one of the most uneventful meetings in recent years”.

WHAT HAPPENED IN 2019?

The Fed had cut interest rates for the third consecutive year in 2019 at its meeting in October last year. The data released since the Fed’s last policy meeting in December did not change the expectations that the US economy will continue to grow around 2 percent this year and the unemployment rate will remain stable.
