MILAN – Rich year for the world arms producers, which during 2018 saw their sales grow by 4.8% to reach 420 billion dollars. A value only partial, that collected by the institute of Stockholm specialized in this field, the Sipri, because lacking the Chinese data: it would be little serious to rely on the estimates available on Beijing.The growth was mainly due to American increases, linked to plans by Donald Trump: "US companies – explained Aude Fleurant, head of the Sipri department on military spending – are preparing for the announced army modernization program from Trump in 2017. It is no coincidence, then, if for the first time since 2002 all the top five places in the top 100 of the military industries are in the hands of American giants. Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon and General Dynamics put together selling 148 billion dollars in weapons, 35% of the entire ranking of the hundred largest industries. Sipri explains that the aggregations are the trend of the moment for the USA: Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics, for example, have made bets of billionaire shopping in 2018. If you take all the stars and stripes representatives in the ranking, you get to 246 billion in sales: 59% of the total and 7.2% more than in 2017.

The number representing Russia has fallen slightly, while European manufacturers have recorded a marginal increase to 102 billion. Sales from the United Kingdom, the first country in the Old Continent in this field, and those from Germany fell, while they grew in France mainly thanks to contracts signed by Dassault.Italy also has a place in this ranking, with Leonardo and Fincantieri. Made in Italy arms sales are credited with a 5% growth in the last year, the market share of Italian companies (out of the total of one hundred companies) is 2.8 percent: more than Germany, Japan or Israel. The combined turnover of our two companies is indicated at 11.7 billion: Leonardo is even in the top ten (eighth place) with 9.8 billion arms sold in 2018, a 4.4 percent growth. A result, it is explained, also linked to the acquisition of Vitrociset, specialized in technology and military services. Fincantieri is instead registered in 50th place, with the shipbuilding industry credited with 1.9 billion of sales (+8 percent).
