Tennis, Davis Cup: Italy ahead 1-0 against the United States

MADRID – The second challenge of the F group starts well for Italy, decisive for hoping for the next round against the United States. The first match in the single was won by Fabio Fognini against Reilly Opelka: the 32-year-old Ligurian, number 12 in the world, then managed to take revenge on the American giant, 36th in the ATP ranking, which in August had eliminated him at the US Open : after an hour and 52 minutes, the match ended 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 for the blue.Opelka, from the height of about 211 centimeters in height, defended himself above all with the service, shooting broadsides over 230 kilometers per hour. But often he found himself in difficulty against fast play and – as far as possible, given the shortness of exchanges – changed by Fognini, who nevertheless kept his head on the service, not really the best shot of his repertoire. Opelka has slipped 23 aces, but Fognini has obtained as many as 16. The American was as lethal in his shifts as he was foul and inaccurate when it came to supporting exchanges from the baseline, especially on the back, while with the right it is defended quite well, thus collecting several points.
The first set went off in just 33 minutes thanks to the break that Fognini took in the third game. Put under pressure by the deep blows of the blue, Opelka failed to recover, thanks to the many unforced errors. In the second the two protagonists have always kept their respective batting turns, until the tie break. Here Opelka, thanks to its air-to-ground missiles, immediately moved forward. On the 5-3 for the American, Fognini badly missed a volley and broke the first racket of the tournament on the ground. Thus USA-Italy is divided by an even set. Spoiled by the error, the Italian didn't get distracted, but he vented his anger in the third set, quickly reaching the 3-0. Opelka's reaction was limited not to lose the service yet, but the American had by now understood that the meeting had gone and that not even his supersonic service would have saved him.Following the challenge between the numbers one of the respective teams, Matteo Berrettini and Taylor Fritz. In closing the double between the blue pair Simone Bolelli / Andreas Seppi and the American Sam Querrey / Jack Sock (but the captains of the two teams have the possibility to change).
