On the evening of Wednesday 27 November, some protesters attacked and set fire to the headquarters of the Iranian consulate in the city of Najaf, in southern Iraq. Six of them died and 50 were injured during the clashes, when police started firing to prevent people from entering the consulate. After the attack, a curfew was imposed in the city.

The protests in Iraq had begun in October and had been directed since the beginning against the Mahdi government, the poor economic conditions in which many Iraqis find themselves and the influence exercised by Iran in Iraqi politics. So far at least 350 people have been killed in the protests, but despite the violence and the controversial intervention by Iran, the demonstrations did not stop.
