Former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, who on Sunday was a candidate for the Democratic primaries for the US presidency, resigned as special UN envoy for climate action. Bloomberg, who has long been involved in environmental protection, was named UN Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change in January 2014 by then-Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon; in March 2018 the general secretary Antonio Guterres had given him the new position. Bloomberg had announced to Guterres his resignation with a letter sent on November 11, two weeks before running for the primaries.
