Mercedes explains Hamilton's problems in the Q3 of Austin – F1 Team – Formula 1

Saturday, however, Hamilton was the protagonist of the worst qualifying of the year, obtaining the lowest starting position from the 2018 German Grand Prix, when he started 14th due to technical problems suffered in Q1. The head of the Mercedes strategy, James Vowles, in the usual debrief video published by the team on its own communication channels, analyzed what was the reason that forced Hamilton so far back on the grid.

"Under his right hand there is a small one manettino that regulates the engine brake – explained the strategy of the Brackley team – normally it has protection, what has happened is that the protection is accidentally skipped. Throughout the ride, every time the wheel turned, (Hamilton) accidentally changed the engine brake and this caused him to lose performance at the end of the lap. A mechanic immediately noticed it when the car returned to the pits – continued Vowles – but obviously the first attempt had been compromised accordingly ".

As for Hamilton's failed leap forward in the second round, the Mercedes tactics man simply admitted that with the slower track it was not possible for English to do better: "You saw that everyone went slower – commented Vowles again – in fact, the track had become slightly slower due to a small change in wind and track temperature. Lewis could not compete with the best and remained in fifth place on the grid ".
