Pasquale is 42 years old and works at the former Ilva da 20, as Electrician. "In 2000, when I arrived here, I was happy: finding a job at South it's not easy". Then, the discovery that the material with whom he worked closely, every day, was asbestos: "They want to hide the reality: here they are not there four thousand, but maybe hundred thousand tons of asbestos. This could create another alarm sanitary and social, with people who are already now worried from the fact of working in the middle ofasbestos and go to the house of fibers, everyday". And then Pasquale begins his activities, solitary, of complaint: "I became an asbestos hound, I find it everywhere", he finds a way to laugh at it. "According to the company the four thousand tons of asbestos inside the factory they are safe and do not create problems, but they are not. I started at denounce the presence of asbestos where it was not detected, and during inspections health I was always the only one to report material like suspected". Hence the belief that the quantity surveyed is actually a lot inferior compared to the really present one: “After my complaints, also made to the judicial authority, they were reclaimed some areas and replaced hazardous materials. All things, however, that have involved a cost for thecompany, who decided to make me pay ".
And he did it by leaving him at home, from one day to the next: "They justified the dismissal with a series of disciplinary disputes made at random. I have received about 15 in the last few years, two of which have also been canceled at the time of arbitration, but it was just a way to put pressure on me ". The latter, in fact, concerns a discussion with a doctor of the company on the application of a surveillance suitable to those exposed to asbestos: "All I did was remind a Mittal and to the doctor what the law on activities in the presence of asbestos and on the surveillance health". According to the company, in doing so, however, it "reported facts and circumstances that were detrimental to reputation"Of the doctor and that have led to" prejudice the company image ". But the motivation, he says, is another: “Mittal has only found the most opportune moment to get rid of a worker who instead of lowering his head decided to denounce the bad management of asbestos within the company ", says the former worker, who is preparing his appeal in full business crisis. A moment in which the battle for health it seems to pass completely unnoticed.
