Costa Smeralda is the first cruise ship that can boast a museum on board and that reduces CO2 emissions. With the furnishings of important Italian companies, it is a tribute to the best of Made in Italy. The first trip to the Mediterranean starts on December 21st
Costa Smeralda is a tribute to Italy. Starting from the name of the ship, which refers to one of the most beautiful tourist areas of Sardinia, and from the name of its bridges and public areas, drawn from famous Italian towns and places, Costa Smeralda is a tour in the Belpaese. The interior design was taken care of by the Creative director Adam D. Tihany, which coordinated the work of four prestigious architectural firms: Dordoni Architetti, Rockwell Group, Jeffrey Beers International is Partner Ship Design.
There first Costa Smeralda cruise will start on 21 December 2019 from Savona. The itinerary includes a week in the western Mediterranean with stopovers in Savona, Marseille, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Civitavecchia and La Spezia.
"A totally innovative project," he said Luca Zuccolo, new building director of Costa Crociere, to Affaritaliani.it, "in contrast with the history of cruise ships. Because at the head of the architects who built it we wanted to put a genius like Adam D. Tihany, which was able to bring together all the most important companies of the desing made in Italy. The new ship represents the Costa Cruises strategy to give guests a fantastic experience in respect of the environment and the Sustainable Development".
The "heart" of the new flagship is the Coliseum, a space in the middle of a ship located on three decks, dedicated to shows. Piazza di Spagna is a large stairway facing aft, on three decks. Square Trastevere, at the bow of the ship, it is the meeting point of three different experiences on board: shopping, tasting and entertainment featuring acrobats and entertainers, street artists and musicians. Another suggestive and panoramic point is the Flying Walk, which reaches the highest point of the ship at 65 meters of height.
Costa Smeralda: for the first time a museum on board
Among the novelties of the new flagship of Costa Cruises the presence of a real museum on board: the CoDe – Costa Design Collection Museum, edited by Matteo Vercelloni. The museum space is spread over 400m2 and is dedicated to the excellence of Italian design, including many signatures that have contributed to the realization and success of the ship.
There CoDe collection is a tribute to the history of "Made in Italy”, Celebrating the great influence that Italian creativity still has around the world. A choice that matches the theme of Costa Smeralda, theItaly’s finest (the best of Italy), and that will involve guests by offering them the most iconic moments in the history of the Italian design.
CoDe has been cured by Matteo Vercelloni, architect and architecture and design critic, former professor of design history at the Politecnico di Milano, editorial consultant for the magazine INTERNI and collaborator with magazines in the sector: "CoDe intends to tell through a selection of artifacts, mostly produced by Italian companies, the vitality of furnishings and objects that, passing over passing fashions, remain ‘classics of Italian design from the 1930s to the present ”, he explained Vercelloni to Affaritaliani.it. "The museum", he concluded Vercelloni, “Is a self-portrait of Italy over time; a complex and multi-linear profile composed of many stories ”.
The museum, designed by Adam D. Tihany, Creative Director of Costa Smeralda, is located in the center of the ship, on deck 7, in order to encourage guests to visit it several times during their stay on board: "The highly contemporary stainless steel portal faces the unique design challenges of space with a series of illuminated arches from within ", he commented Tihany. "The tunnel rings separate, allowing guests to deviate from their path to explore the exhibition spaces to the right and left of the arches. Whether for a short trip or if you decide to stop and admire the collection, the CoDe will enrich the guest experience by celebrating the best of Italian design ". It is easy to understand that all the beautiful things of Italy were put on the ship", concluded Tihany to Affaritaliani.it micorophones. "From the design point of view there are 4 world-famous architects who invented their Italy, an Italy that speaks to Italians and foreigners".
The part dedicated to "product design”Is composed of products that are part of the catalogs of Italian companies. This dimension of "permanence in time" is flanked by a section dedicated to the memory in which to trace a series of objects of affection, which have accompanied us from generation to generation. The space dedicated to transport and the fashion showcase (edited by Augusta Grecchi) allow to widen the look beyond the furnishing and complements sector, and the cinema, offered as an expressive collection of sequences and narrative notes (section edited by Roberto Dassoni), testifies over time the diffusion of 'taste' and the value of the creativity of the Italian project in a broad sense.

Costa Smeralda: sustainable travel
Costa Smeralda is the first Costa ship to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the "cleanest" fossil fuel in the world. The use of this fuel represents a real environmental breakthrough that improves air quality, almost totally avoiding particulate and sulfur oxide emissions, both at sea and in port. Moreover, the LNG allows to significantly reduce the LNG emissions of nitrogen oxide and CO2.
