There Rome loses 2-1 to Moenchengladbach and he not only loses the lead of the Europa League group J, but slips to third place surpassed by the new leaders Basaksehir (7 points) and right from Borussia (which, however, is on equal points, 5).
As in the Olympic match, the defeat against the Germans comes at the last minute. This time not with an invented penalty but with a header by Thuram which complicates the European path of the Giallorossi.
The first two goals had both been scored by Fazio: an own goal that has unlocked the match and a draw. Until the 95th minute, when the son of art condemned Fonseca's team to the knockout, which will now be played in the last two games (against Basaksehir and Wolfsberger).
It's all Fazio
Fonseca had said this at the conference the night before: there will be few changes. And few changes have been. Santon takes the right lane, with Florenzi once again on the bench. Front not refitted Pastore, regularly in the starting field behind Dzeko.
Rome starts well. Kluivert and Veretout find themselves well between the lines and put their opponents in difficulty. The Germans, however, after a few minutes enter the game and begin to press high, making the Giallorossi ball round into a dangerous position. The two teams are very short, the brilliance of the game suffers. At 28 'Borussia is already forced to the first change for Jantschke's injury: Hofmann enters. The best of Roma is Pastore: his tears, his verticalizations and his vision of play are the focus of the attack. But on the 35 'the Giallorossi go under: Thuram goes away on the left, he arrives at the bottom and low crosses: Fazio, anxious, puts the ball in his own goal, despite the fact that behind him there was no one ready to intervene. However, the action is most likely vitiated by a side foul not signaled by the linesman. The team of Fonseca ahead seems to have few ideas and the only ones come from Pastore's unpredictability.
The joke gets to the last one
Roma returned to the field in the most determined shot: pressing high and speeding up the ball. In front, however, he is always a pastor playing the charge (his shot per lap is miraculously saved by Sommer). At the 64th minute the Giallorossi equalized: Kolarov's perfect free-kick, Fazio slipped and mocked the goalkeeper. Borussia is not there and raises its center of gravity, leaving Rome with large spaces for the counter-attack, not exploited especially by Kluivert. After the entry of Diawara for Mancini, Fonseca calls Zaniolo back on the bench and plays the Under card. But it is Veretout in this second half that drags the team: not only for racing and pressing, but also with a series of sudden verticalisations that put Borussia in crisis. Exit Pastore and enter Perotti for the last ten minutes. Thirty seconds from the end the Germans pass: head of Plea, Thuram always on top goes past Pau Lopez. Game over.
