A golden point for Genoa under the Vesuvius

Marco Liguori

With a prudent race, Genoa won a point on a very difficult field against Napoli in a crisis of results but not of play. It is a very important result, my dear Genoa friends from Boccadasse to Mato Grosso, obtained by Thiago Motta in the simplest way: not making mistakes, contrary to what was done with Udinese. First of all he deployed the team with a tight 4-3-2-1: after the first 10-15 minutes of initial heel, due also to the forcing of Napoli, the Griffin got back on track. Low center of gravity, as demonstrated by the possession of the Lega A statistics: Genoa scored 55% (Napoli 45%), but 70% was spent in their own half. Effective the ball round (475 successful passes against 339 opponents) and the rossoblu interdiction (85 recoveries against 41): in the latter rank four genoans stand out (Lerager in first place, Pinamonti, Zapata and Ankersen) and only one blue ( Koulibaly). Not only. Pinamonti was the author of a running and sacrifice match, almost as an added midfielder: he raced almost as much as SchOne with 11.288 km against the Danish director's 11.514. Had he hit the door in the second half, he would have been honored with the title of "el hombre del partido": but Koulibaly thwarted the occasion with timing. Patience, the appointment with a decisive goal is only postponed.

And speaking of scoring chances, Napoli have not been watching but neither has Genoa: 7 against 5. But there is a fact that reveals Radu's great night that has foiled a conspicuous series of threats: seven parades, by which four decisive, against only one of Ospina. Summing up, the point won by the rossoblus is important, against a strong opponent, despite his problems (above all extra field): it is worth as much gold as it weighs and will serve a great deal in the struggle for salvation.

So Genoa has unleashed two level performances with two big ones in the A series like Juventus (but without getting points, not for their own fault, as is widely known) and Naples. After the stop for the national teams, Thiago Motta will be called to a counter-check in Ferrara against Spal: it means that he will have to prove he can score points against a direct competitor. And if he confirms that he has understood, as he demonstrated last night at the San Paolo, the mistakes made against Udinese and swept them away, it is very likely that he will also pass this test which is the most important one. Over and out!
