            <p>Ted Green, a tough former defenseman who played for 11 seasons with the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League, has died. He was 79 years old.

The news of Green's death was announced Saturday on the Edmonton Oilers Twitter account. A spokesman for the team said Green died on Tuesday.

With the Oilers, Green served as head coach and assistant coach between 1982 and 2000. He was the Oilers head coach between 1991 and 1993.

In 1992, he led the Oilers to the association final but the team missed the playoffs the following season. Green was fired in 1993 when the team was 3-18-3.

Green also served as assistant coach with the New York Rangers between 2000 and 2004.

Spectators at Madison Square Garden were invited to observe a moment of silence on Saturday afternoon before the Oilers-Rangers game.

Originally from Manitoba, Green began his playing career with the Bruins in the 1960-61 season. Nicknamed "Terrible Ted", Green played with the Bruins until 1972 and had his name engraved on the Stanley Cup in 1970 and 1972, even though he did not play any games in the 1969- 70 following serious head injuries, after being involved in a stick fight with Wayne Maki, St. Louis Blues, in a pre-season game in September 1969.

After the 1972 season, Green joined the New England Whalers in the World Hockey Association. He wore the Whalers uniform for three years before playing his last four seasons with the Winnipeg Jets, still in the AMH.

In addition to his two Stanley Cups as a player, Green has contributed to five more with the Edmonton Oilers, four as assistant coach (1984, 1985m 1987, 1988) and another as a co-coach (1990). ).

In the NHL, Green had 48 goals and 254 points in 621 games. He added 180 points in 452 games in the World Association.
