Gary Gold, United States coach: "Really proud of my players" – Rugby – World – USA

"What is your feeling after this defeat against France (33-9)?
I am incredibly proud of this group of players. I feel like we were really close. We made some mistakes and when you play against a team of the caliber of France, these errors are paid at a high price. But we never gave up, not just one of the 80 minutes. I am really proud of all players. The substitutes made the difference when they came in. We worked incredibly hard to make such a match today. I'm a little sad that we could not register a try to score more points on the scoreboard. But it's really a very good performance and very positive to move forward.

By hooking up a team like France, do you think getting closer to the best nations?
The gap is narrowing considerably. If you look a few years back, some World Cups back, the gap was still around 70-80 points in the matches between teams Tier 1 and Tier 2. But now, we manage to stay in touch at score until the 65th minute. We just do not make mistakes against teams of this caliber. We have to learn from all that, but I think the gap is narrowing.

"It's part of learning"

Your only regret finally, is not to have registered tests against France?
When we put ourselves in the right conditions to score a try, we put a little pressure, and we dropped the ball or conceded a penalty. But that's part of learning. That's what makes Rugby World Cup a great opportunity to grow for us. The more we play against teams of the caliber of France, and Argentina next week, and the better we get. "
