Valtteri Bottas he was the protagonist of a violent impact against barriers at the end of the Q3 of the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Mexico: the Finn of the Mercedes ended up on the wall at the last corner, while he was busy with his final attempt. Bottas, transported to the medical center for investigations, obtained the authorization to participate in tomorrow's race.
The Bottas incident had consequences on the pole of Max Verstappen: the Dutch driver from Red Bull, in fact, did not slow down at the end of the race despite a double yellow flag for the crash of Bottas. In 2016 in Hungary, Nico Rosberg was given a penalty of three positions on the grid for a similar infringement.
More than an hour after the end of the qualifications, the commissioners carefully examined the telemetry of Verstappen and summoned him. This in light of the statements of the Dutch, who at the press conference had admitted that he had not slowed down at the end of his tour. This claim has turned against him. A penalty of three grid positions was imposed on Verstappen. The sanction of Verstappen promotes Charles Leclerc on pole, with Sebastian Vettel at his side in the front row.
"The commissioners (…) examined video, audio and telemetry tests, which clearly showed that the pilot tried to capture a valid lap time and did not reduce the speed in the sector concerned", reads the note released by FIA. TO Verstappen two points were also deducted from the license.
