Bad surprise in this season for thousands of taxpayers owners: their property tax is up sharply while it is to be paid by October 15 at the latest. according to The Parisian
"In the course of the summer, tens of thousands of homeowners received an email or a letter from the tax authorities announcing the bad news: their property tax 2019 will increase sharply compared to the previous year."
As every year, the tax administration has revised (upward or downward) the rental value (cadastral) which is used as a basis for calculating the property tax. It represents the annual theoretical rent that the property would be able to earn under normal conditions at a reference date.
Increases up to 136% according to the UNPI
Established in 1970, these rental values are re-evaluated sparingly by the tax authorities according to the territories. The subject is sensitive for the local authorities who fear that their administered owners are too much penalized by the upward revision of these values which determine the amount of the property tax to be paid. About 134,000 homes have seen their rental value reassessed in 2017 and 2018 against 149,000 in 2016, according to the tax authorities, reports the daily.
The National Union of Property Owners (UNPI) does not hear it that way, mentioning increases in Isere and in some departments of Auvergne, sometimes up to + 136%. According to its president, Pierre Hautus, "this is a way to increase the tax return for local elected officials while the abolition of the housing tax continues."
