Dominican Johnny Cueto released a single hit gem in five episodes in his first game for the San Francisco Giants, since he underwent Tommy John surgery last year.
The right struck out four and walked one in five bleached innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was relieved by Kyle Barraclough in the sixth after making 69 pitches, 43 of them strikes.
Cueto, 33, was 3-2 with a 3.23 ERA in nine starts last season before falling on the disabled list. It is in the fourth year of a six-year, $ 130 million contract.
The right-handed pitcher withdrew the first seven batters he faced, until Kevin Kramer hit him unstoppable in the third episode. After taking the second out of the third, he gave passport to Kevin Newman, and then took out another seven in order before leaving the game.
The Giants took the 5-4 victory.
