The Cuban volleyball team that participates in the Norceca championship won three sets for one in one of the semifinals this Friday night and will face the United States in the battle for the gold medal of the tournament.

The Manitoba arena in Winnipeg witnessed the Cuban triumph early by 25-22, 25-22 and 25-19 markers, but not before having dropped by 17-25 in the first set. For its part, the United States bleached Mexico.

The young Miguel Ángel López (21 points) and Marlon Yant (15) carried the offensive weight on the Cuban squad, with several unstoppable services and lethal shots for the Canadian defense. They were seconded by Osniel Melgarejo (13), as well as Robertlandy Simón and Roamy Alonso, both with 7.

«The team showed a lot of unity and aggressiveness. We put a lot of pressure on our service and the counterattacks were key to the victory, ”the attacker Miguel Ángel López said in Winnipeg in statements to Radio Habana Cuba.

"From the beginning we knew that Canada will be our main rival in the Pre-Olympic (January), so it was very important to achieve victory today, because that puts more pressure on them," added Lopez, who has shone in the last two seasons in the Argentine League

In the previous quarterfinal match, the Creole representatives had defeated the Puerto Ricans with whom they faced in the first crossing after being second in their qualifying group B, with a balance of 2 wins and a setback, the latter against the United States .

This pass to the final coincides with the September 6 stipulated in Cuba as National Volleyball Day for the triumph of the Spectacular Brunettes of the Caribbean in the Leningrad World Cup-1978.

Less than two weeks ago, Cubans won undefeated the Champions Cup in the Norceca area (North, Central American and Caribbean), held in Colorado Sprins, United States, which gave them the ticket for the January Pre-Olympic qualifier.

The Cuban delegation only traveled with 10 players due to visa problems and in Canada one of them defected. In addition, the main coach, Nicolás Vives, could not make the trip either.
