Aerial bombardment of the Idleb region in northwestern Syria ceased on Saturday morning after Russia announced a ceasefire, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. of Man (OSDH).

"There are no war planes in the sky and air strikes have stopped," said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the OSDH.

The air strikes in the Idleb region, a bastion pounded by regime forces and insurgents, have ceased after the entry into force of this unilateral truce only affecting the Syrian army, he said, adding that artillery and rocket fire continued, he added.

The Russian center for reconciliation has called, Friday in a statement, "the commanders of armed groups to give up provocations and join the process of peaceful settlement in the areas they control".

After several months of Russian and Syrian air strikes, the regime's forces began an onshore offensive on August 8 and on Thursday gained new areas in this region, dominated by the insurgents of rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). the Syrian civil war.

The agreement between Russia and Turkey on the creation of a "demilitarized zone" in the Idleb region, unveiled in September 2018, to separate government areas from territories in the hands of insurgents, did not prevent military attacks of the regime.

Since the start of the escalation in late April, nearly 950 civilians have been killed, according to the OSDH, while more than 400,000 people have been displaced, according to the UN, which described the situation as one of the worst humanitarian "nightmares" of the conflict ".
