Oka Mayor Pascal Quevillon and Kanesatake Grand Chief Serge Simon reconciled at the First Nations and Municipal Summit in Wendake.
The mayor apologized for his remarks, which had been denounced by Grand Chief Simon last July.
The Grand Chief of Kanesatake and the Mayor of Oka have been at loggerheads for several months on lands that a developer would like to surrender to the Mohawks, a decision that is disputed by the Municipality of Oka, where there is concern that enclave.
The mayor of Oka was not to be present on Friday morning for the Kanesatake Grand Chief's speech and his presence had initially created a stir. Discussions then accelerated the developments.
In front of the media, Grand Chief Simon hailed the "courage" of Pascal Quevillon for taking the lead. The mayor of Oka said he was ready to turn the page and move forward for the good of their communities.
