(Ottawa) Ottawa is blocking the construction of the aerodrome that the citizens of Saint-Roch-de-l'Achigan did not want.
Federal Minister of Transport Marc Garneau announced Friday morning that he has issued an order prohibiting the project as proposed by the proponent, Aerodrome SRA, for reasons of public interest.
"In this case, there were deficiencies in the proponent's consultation and in the proposal for the aerodrome development project, including lack of clarity about anticipated activities at the aerodrome and the impact on the aerodrome. community, confirm the need for action, "Garneau says in a statement.
The population of the municipality of Lanaudière held a referendum earlier this month to measure support for the aerodrome project. The result was unequivocal: 96% of citizens voted against.
The mayor of Saint-Roch-de-l'Achigan, Yves Prud'homme, welcomed Minister Garneau's decision. He believes that his citizens have managed to demonstrate that this project was against the public interest through this referendum.
"One can only be extremely satisfied. Labor Day is about to begin, "he exclaimed in an interview with The Canadian Press.
Minister Garneau had until early September to make his decision. He says he made his decision based on section 432 of the Aeronautics Act, which allows him to intervene when a development is not in the public interest.
