(Montreal) The patrol boats of the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) will be visible on the roads of the province during this long weekend of Labor Day.

Last year, five people lost their lives during this long leave on the roads served by the SQ.

SQ spokesman Sgt. Daniel Thibaudeau says the main causes of most fatal or seriously injured crashes are still the same: speeding or distracted driving.

Police officers will monitor the speed, the distraction caused by the cell phone while driving and impaired driving with alcohol, drugs or a combination of both.

"There are also other factors that will be monitored by our patrol officers, such as the non-wearing of seatbelts," warns Mr. Thibaudeau. It may be hard to believe in 2019, but there are still people who do not believe it's useful. Yet seatbelt is a very valuable tool to avoid injuries in collisions. "

In this period of high traffic on our roads, the police also use the patience of motorists and courtesy, especially near construction sites.

"Even if it's a holiday for many people, it's not necessarily the case for construction workers," said the sergeant. Observe the posted limits and maintain appropriate safety corridors in the presence of workers or protective vehicles. "

Since the beginning of the summer season, the SQ has counted 53 fatal collisions on its territory since June 21.

According to Sergeant Daniel Thibaudeau, "statistics show a downward trend over the last five years," which is encouraging, he adds. The officer still sees in these statistics still too many deaths on the roads.
