"I hope I have a better chance on hard"

Andrea Petkovic, 88th player of the world, will be the next opponent ofElise Mertens (WTA 25) at the US Open after the easy victory of the Limburger, 23, 6-2, 6-2 Thursday in the second round in New York against the Czech Kristyna Pliskova (WTA 86). The 31-year-old German, whose career has been plagued by injuries, has created a surprise by dominating another Czech, Petra Kvitova, World 6th, finalist at the Australian Open in January, 6-4, 6-4.

"I'm so happy, exclaimed Petkovic after his victory. "Petra is one of my favorite players on the circuit. It's always very difficult to play against her, but for one reason or another, she always pushes me to surpass myself. The key was finding the right areas to serve and being aggressive when the opportunity arose. Petra is so powerful, that if you let her dictate the game, she will sweep you away. There were ups and downs, but I was there at the important moments".

This will be the second confrontation in just over two months between Elise Mertens and Andrea Petkovic. The two players had met at the Mallorca WTA tournament, on grass, with a victory of the Belgian number 1 6-2, 6-2. In New York, a city she loves, the German, former world top 10 and semi-finalist at Roland Garros in 2014, however, hopes to reverse the trend.

"I lost a lot of grass on her, but I think turf is also her best surface", she said. "I hope to have a better chance here on hard, where I feel much more comfortable. I am in the fall of my career, not yet in the winter, but I still love the challenges. I will try to put it in a most uncomfortable situation possible".
