The three men will move back five places on the grid, while Daniil Kvyat, Alex Albon and Lance Stroll will start from the back of the grid. But it was Mercedes who had a lot of work between the EL3s and the qualification, with the repair of Lewis Hamilton's damaged car.
Q1 – 18 minutes
It took a few minutes to see a first time attempt by Kimi Räikkönen, before Robert Kubica's Williams let loose a huge plume of smoke! A crisp and clean engine break for the Mercedes block in its new specification.
This is the second weekend after Sergio Pérez's yesterday afternoon, and reliability could be a real concern for the star brand and its suppliers.
After almost 15 minutes of interruption, the session was restarted and it was Max Verstappen who was the first to start the assault on the clock! But the Dutchman complains of engine cuts and cuts his effort, before leaving for a slow lap to recharge his batteries.
Daniel Ricciardo clocked a time, beaten by Lewis Hamilton (1'45 "260) and Valtteri Bottas, who set a benchmark in 1'45" 141, quickly outpaced by an exceptional Charles Leclerc in 1'43 "587!
Verstappen is a return to the garage with only 6'30 "to play in this Q1 Albon takes the fifth time, but nearly two seconds of Leclerc.
Finally, Verstappen came out at the very end of Q1 with a loaded track in single-seaters, but the other drivers were in preparation for their quick lap. Finally, he finished in 1'44 "622 with third place!
An improvement that falls very well because the red flag is brandished following the engine break Antonio Giovinazzi in the descent to the Eau Rouge! Attempts are stopped with immediate effect.
The eliminated are Pierre Gasly, Carlos Sainz, Kvyat, George Russell and Kubica. If the result is frustrating for Gasly, he is in front of Kvyat for his return to Toro Rosso.
Q2 – 15 minutes
The second part of qualifying was delayed by the engine break Giovinazzi, and the first to launch the assault of a very fast turn in Q2 was Lewis Hamilton, who made a time of 1'43 "592!
He was beaten by Leclerc in 1'43 "376, and Vettel has intercaled 130 thousandths of Leclerc Clearly, the Mercedes now rolls with a motor mode more powerful, however, see if the reliability will be reduced.
Behind, Bottas' first attempt was disappointing, six tenths from Leclerc, and one tenth ahead of Verstappen. Räikkönen had a very good lap at eight thousandths of a second from Verstappen, and half a second ahead of the other pilots in the pack.
Leclerc was frightened when he came out for his second attempt of Q2 with a turbo lag, resolved after a few hundred meters.
Hülkenberg and Magnussen set out to break the deadlock, as did Grosjean. Stroll did not come out, like Albon, the two men being sentenced from the back of the grid.
Hulkenberg improves, Magnussen too, but not Stroll! Ricciardo takes fifth place, Grosjean the 11th place. Leclerc improved in 1'42 "938, and Vettel in 1'43" 039, both drivers taking another set of soft tires for the start.
The eliminated are Grosjean and Norris, as well as Stroll and Albon, who are sentenced from the back of the grid, and Giovinazzi, who could not defend himself after his engine break.
Q3 – 12 minutes
We are there, the battle for pole position is launched in Belgium, between Ferrari drivers and Mercedes drivers, who seem the only ones capable of playing it.
Ricciardo was the first to clock a time of 1'44 "257, while the Mercedes idled in their warm-up lap, and Hamilton complained of losing the gum temperature by being almost twice stop on the track!
Leclerc is much faster in the first sector, and Hamilton finishes in 1'43 "282, three tenths better than Bottas, and Leclerc takes six tenths in Hamilton in 1'42" 644! Vettel missed and stayed eight-tenths behind Leclerc, and so behind Hamilton.
The pilots are all relaunching for an attempt, including Hulkenberg who has not yet done any time in this Q3. Hamilton and Leclerc have gone ahead and refuse to play any suction game, to keep the temperature in the tires.
Leclerc improves his first sector, well ahead of Hamilton, but Vettel is faster than his teammate! The second sector gives the advantage to Leclerc, who is gaining ground, while Hamilton and Vettel are late! Vettel and Hamilton will play second place for a few thousandths!
Leclerc signs a time of 1'42 "519, Hamilton does not improve, and Vettel takes the second place! There are seven tenths between Leclerc and Vettel, but the two Ferrari are in the front row, and Leclerc signs his third pole position in career.
The second line will consist of two Mercedes from Hamilton and Bottas, ahead of Verstappen. Ricciardo and Hülkenberg are sixth and seventh but will take five places on the grid, and Kimi Räikkönen will be in third row.
Pérez and Magnussen will be in fourth row at the start, ahead of Grosjean and Norris who will complete the top 10 of the grid.
