The 21-year-old Monegasque driver beat his team-mate Sebastian Vettel by six tenths of a second, which allowed Ferrari to dominate the two free practice sessions of the day.

Championship leader Lewis Hamilton settled for fourth place in the second session, finishing behind his teammate at Mercedes, Valtteri Bottas.

The session ended a few minutes before the end when Sergio Perez came to a halt on the side of the track with smoke escaping from behind his Racing Point, which seemed like a broken engine. The Mexican driver made the fifth time ahead of the Dutch Max Verstappen (Red Bull).

Quebec's Lance Stroll, on the other Racing Point, was eighth. Earlier in the day, some of his car's bodywork (pontoon and bonnet) broke off, leaving debris on the track and delaying the first practice session.

Earlier in the day, Vettel led the first session with a lead of 0.214 seconds ahead of Leclerc and 0.933 seconds ahead of Verstappen on a hot sunny day at the circuit of Spa-Francorchamps in the forest of the Ardennes.

Vettel clinched his last victory on this circuit last year.

Hamilton lost the first half of this practice session because of a faulty accelerator pedal, which had to be changed. He was sixth.
