The Red Devil shone especially at the very end of the course under the shirt of Chelsea.
And the best player of the 2018/2019 campaign
Europa League is … Eden Hazard! On paper, the trophy awarded to the number 10 of the Devils seems logical. Yes, in theory, the most talented player who has walked on the lawn of the competition is probably good Eden. But on closer inspection, one detail is perplexing. Indeed, the Belgian has participated in only eight games of the fifteen contested by Chelsea during his victorious career and held only half of them.
In all, the left winger only played 451 minutes out of 1380 possible, posting
de facto less than a third of the playing time he could accumulate. Absent in the double confrontation against Thessaloniki, BATE Borisov and Fehérvár in the group stage, he had waxed the bench in the sixteenth-final match against Malmö and in the two eighth-league games won against Dynamo Kiev.
In fact, it is at the very end of the course that Maurizio Sarri really relied on Hazard. Holder in the semi-final return (won on penalties against Frankfurt), and especially in the final against Arsenal, the player had slammed a double and issued two
assists in two matches. Apparently enough to see the forty-eight coaches and fifty-five journalists on the jury award him the victory.
We would have rather seen Olivier Giroud be crowned, he who scored eleven goals in twelve starts, including a hat-trick against Kiev in eighth (not to mention his five assists). Even the Serb Luka Jovic, who had carried the attack of the surprising Eintracht Frankfurt (ten goals) until the semifinals. In short, it's still an individual reward for the Devil's captain, but it's probably not the most deserved.
