Canada slipped to the medal table at the end of the Pan American Games Sunday in Lima, Peru. But Canadian athletes have won several qualifications for the Tokyo Olympics next year.
Canada finished third with 152 medals (35 gold, 64 silver and 53 bronze), compared to 217 four years ago in Toronto.
The United States dominated with 293 medals (120-88-85), followed by Brazil with 171 (55-45-71).
"I'm really proud of the team's performance," said Canadian Olympic Committee President Tricia Smith. We have certainly had a lot of success. I would say that, overall, the Games have been very positive. "
In 19 days of competition, Canada secured a place in Tokyo for horse riding (team dressage, team jump), artistic swimming (duo, team), women's water polo, sailing (49er men) and archery (men's classic arch).
Ellie Black shone by winning five medals at second Pan American Games in a row. She was named flag bearer for the closing ceremony at the National Stadium of Peru.
