This was the second match between Andreescu and Wozniacki this season. Andreescu also had the advantage over the former No. 1 in the world in January in Auckland. It was then a first career win for Andreescu against a player from top 10 world. She has since added six to her record.
This time, Andreescu was the favorite, she who is 15e seeded in New York. Wozniacki slipped to 19e world rank.
In the fourth round, Andreescu will face American Taylor Townsend, who defeated Romania's Sorana Cirstea 7-5, 6-2.
Townsend surprised fourth seed Simona Halep earlier this week. She currently occupies 116e world-wide.
Later on Saturday, Ontarian Denis Shapovalov also had to play his third round match. He had an appointment with the French Gael Monfils.
