Automobile Magazine | Opel Zafira Life: a minivan transformed into a van

Zafira released in 1999, sold more than 2.7 million copies, was looking for a replacement. Opel offers the Zafira Life which, from minivan, has metamorphosed into van with up to eight seats.

At the time the Zafira had innovated with its two retractable seats in the floor to offer seven real seats without dismantling. A tip that was very appreciated in his time. But since the collapse of the sector in favor of crossover, Opel no longer had a large capacity vehicle.

The German brand has been knocking on the PSA door after the purchase to use the base of the utility Peugeot Traveler or Citroën Space tourer to give life to Zafira Life and for professionals to a utility version with the Vivaro.

Three dimensions in the catalog

The Zafira Life comes in three versions: L1 at 4.61 m, L2 at 4.90 m and L3 at 5.31m. What satisfy a large audience: the individual to the professional station or business. The version L1 5 seats, is a little closer to the old Zafira, longer than 6 cm.

But the comparison stops there because with 10 cm more in width and 24 cm in height, one plays in the category useful vehicle. Confirmation with the driving position and a steering wheel that can be adjusted well on comfortable seats. Finishing, the German, sober, with plastics a little hard to the touch but who can withstand the blows.

Nice to drive

Once the dimensions of the machine is in mind, the Zafira Life is pleasant to drive and we quickly forget his side "van". The new eight-speed automatic transmission associated with the 177ch 2L diesel appears as the best compromise.

You just have to be familiar with the wheel on the top of the mini console to get into drive mode, neutral, parking or reverse. After a few kilometers, we appreciate the silence on board and its agility in town in particular.

Reasonable consumption

With the head-up system, you can not leave the road of the eyes with the GPS and speed reminder. The raises are good and smooth, with a consumption that remains reasonable around 8 l.

Good chassis, well suspended, effective braking, the Zafira has strengths to convince by its aspect service rendered to the family.

Inside

If it has several storage spaces, we regret the big gap between the driver and his passenger to put phone and other small objects and a USB port at the front, supplemented by a cigarette lighter and a USB only to the l 'back. Fortunately, under the seat, a 220V socket can recharge a computer for example.

Automatic opening

The sliding rear doors allow a good access on board with automatic opening while passing the foot. For third place in L1 you have to play with flexibility to access it. But in the other versions, 19 cm more facilitate the approach.

For the family

Also available in 150 hp 2L with a six-speed manual transmission, it also has a 4X4 version in the catalog with the help of the Dangel preparer.

The Zafira Life with its enhanced ground clearance tackles without complex a chaotic course if it is necessary and, in addition to its integral transmission (to 6,400 € HT all the same and to make go out of factory), the blocking rear differential (665 € HT) can get out of many situations.

In short, if you are looking for a vehicle for the family with luggage, without too much attachment to a hyper trendy design, the Zafira Life can meet your expectations.
