Liverpool, titled in May after winning Tottenham in the final, saw two of its award-winning players. Alisson Becker, 26, has been named best goalkeeper. He was preferred to France's Hugo Lloris (Tottenham) and Germany's Marc-André ter Stegen (FC Barcelona).
The Dutchman Virgil van Dijk, 28, is the best defender. His English teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dutchman Matthijs de Ligt were his competitors.
The best midfielder is young Dutchman Frenkie de Jong, 22, one of the leaders of Ajax Amsterdam, semi-finalist of the competition. De Jong was transferred to FC Barcelona during the summer. Denmark's Christian Eriksen (Tottenham) and Englishman Jordan Henderson, captain of Liverpool, also appeared in the shortlist.
The best striker is Lionel Messi, 32 years old. The Argentinian FC Barcelona, top scorer of the last edition, was preferred to his eternal Portuguese rival Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus) and Senegalese Liverpool Sadio Mané.
