AirAsia X lists 12 A330neo and 30 A321XLR in Airbus order book

AirAsia X signs again with Airbus. The Malaysian long-haul low-cost has committed under a firm order to acquire twelve additional A330-900s, as well as thirty A321XLRs. No further details were provided on this agreement reached on 30 August Kuala Lumpur. However, it involves the partial conversion of a memorandum of understanding reached at the Farnborough Air Show in 2018. It focused on the acquisition of 34 A330-900s. At that time, Tony Fernandes, president of the group AirAsia, said that all of his orders would not be enough to cover the needs of the group.

The strategy has therefore changed a little and AirAsia X is more cautious in acquiring smaller capacity devices to launch and test new routes, reducing its risks. This is not a surprise, such a decision was thought for a long time with the A321LR at the time. The A330neo will be destined for its routes to its strongest markets, and the new routes more than eight hours of flight it dreams of serving new, for example in Europe.

AirAsia X's commitments for the A330neo now reach 78 aircraft – not more than 100. According to initial plans, about thirty of them must allow the renewal of the fleet (which consists of 36 A330-300), the others must serve growth. The first A330neo was delivered in August of Thai AirAsia X.
