The man admitted to visiting Sarah V. with a weapon to "intimidate" him. It is the 99th feminicide in France since the beginning of the year, according to the women's rights associations.
Sarah V., a mother of three, had lived with the suspect for almost five years before a separation "very conflictual" in spring. She was found dead at her home in Maillé (Vienne), 25 kilometers from Poitiers, on her 30th birthday. The mother succumbed to a chest shot in the heart area. An investigation was opened for assassination after the discovery of the body. His former mate, former jockey and father of his third child, was taken into custody.
The 38-year-old man had already been sentenced in 2011, a sentence upheld on appeal in 2012, for violence against another woman who had just left him. He was the subject since May of a complaint of Sarah V. "for facts of threats and harassment" that the young woman had deposited with the gendarmerie of Parthenay (Deux-Sèvres), near Vasles, where she worked in a bar. He had been taken into custody following this complaint, heard in Niort. In parallel, the young woman had denounced the same facts in a letter addressed to the parquet of Poitiers.
A rally in tribute to the victim is organized Sunday at 10 am in Poitiers, on the initiative of several associations for the defense of women's rights. They count 99 women killed by their spouse or ex-spouse since the beginning of the year 2019, while a Grenelle of violence against women must begin Tuesday in Matignon.
