According to the City of Gatineau Police Service (SPVG), the flames blocked the front door. The firefighters had to rescue the five family members who were inside. They were all transported to the hospital.

The three-month-old baby is in critical condition. The 20-month-old boy and a 31-year-old man sustained serious injuries. A 28-year-old woman and a 12-year-old were also taken to the hospital for burns.

In all, 27 firefighters fought the fire, which was quickly brought under control.

No smoke detector

The Gatineau Fire Department confirms that there was no smoke detector in operation during the fire.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but the SPVG favors the thesis of a criminal act.

It is difficult to quantify the time that will be needed (for this survey).

The investigation was entrusted to us because the firefighters were not able to determine at first sight what was the cause of the fireexplained Andrée East, spokesperson for the SPVG.

A neighborhood in shock

A few hours after the fire, many neighbors saw the extent of the damage.

It's terriblesaid Gisele Belair. The neighbor says she woke up in the middle of the night and saw a truck ignited by her window.

We would not think it could happen at home.

The grandmother of the three-month-old baby also went to the scene of the tragedy. This is not understandable. It's a nightmare, that's all I can say said Lucie Labbé, before bursting into tears.

Two other residents have been evacuated and are still waiting to return to their homes.
